Collection NumberMSS 0479DescriptionThis unique collection captures the response of many residents of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region to the inauguration of President Donald Trump and the first 100 days of his administration. The 100-day response began with the Women’s March of 2017 held on Saturday, January 21, 2017. The day started with a gathering in Acacia Park where the crowd listened to several speakers and performance artists. This was followed by a march along the streets of Colorado Springs. Observers estimated the crowd to be in the range of 7,000 participants which made it the largest public demonstration in the history of Colorado Springs. Images of other significant anti-Trump events captured in this collection include marches and rallies against the Dakota Access and Keystone pipelines, the anti-Muslim immigration ban, a Climate Justice Vigil, the March for Science, and more. Because of the dynamic nature of these events, many of the images were captured by cell phones or are the products of video screen capture technology. Consequently, in some cases, the resolution is less than desirable. However, the historic significance of these events demanded their inclusion. Numerous grass-roots organizations served as organizers, sponsors, or supporters of these events. Included among these groups were SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice), UCOS (Unite Colorado Springs), NAACP Colorado Montana Wyoming State Conference, NAACP Colorado Springs Branch 4001, the Colorado Springs Council for Justice, and the Pikes Peak Justice & Peace Commission. There was one pro-Trump rally held in this city during this period on April 15, 2017 with approximately 75 participants.
